Hungary’s first gold-crowned confectioner
The memorial exhibition organized in honor of Henrik Spelter, who was born 140 years ago, can be viewed at the Hungarian Trade and Catering Industry Museum until November 20.
What do the American “Ice Café”, the “Spelter slice” in Tata, the “Apfelsein donut” in Berlin, the “Dreifuss slice” in Eperjes or the “Madeleines parisienes” in Paris have in common? All of the ones listed include the once famous but now forgotten Hungarian confectioner, III. In Henrik Spelter’s beautiful, handwritten and illustrated collection of recipes.
Based around this artefact, the Hungarian Confectionery Industry Council, the Hungarian Trade and Hospitality Museum and the Kuny Domokos Museum in Tata wish to commemorate III. In memory of Henrik Spelter and the Spelter confectionery dynasty in Tata. The work of Henrik Spelter is a little-known chapter in the history of Hungarian hospitality and gastronomy, although based on his exemplary life and the achievements, the name Spelter has a place in the pantheon of the most famous Hungarian confectioners.
