Absolut celebrates the artist’s rediscovered blue painting with a limited edition Andy Warhol bottle
Absolut’s iconic bottle silhouette has inspired more than a thousand artists over the years, but the most famous of them all is Andy Warhol, who created several paintings of the drink in the eighties. The recently discovered Absolut “blue” painting is now on display for the first time in October at the Spritmuseum in Stockholm. To celebrate this, Absolut released a limited edition bottle with a design inspired by the painting, and as part of their art project called “The Other Half”, the Hungarian brand representative asked the Hungarian artists of the youngart online gallery to “complement” the original work by reimagining Warhol’s painting. and make something new with it.
The joint history of Andy Warhol and Absolut vodka began decades ago, when the artist first painted the drink’s iconic bottle silhouette in 1985, commissioned by the brand. Warhol almost fetishized the bottle and its contents, it became one of his favorite sources of inspiration – and according to some legends, he even used the vodka inside as a perfume.
In 2020, it was a real world sensation when the second, “blue” Absolut painting, believed to be lost for a long time, was discovered at an auction, which is now being exhibited to the public for the first time thanks to Absolut and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. The painting will be presented as the centerpiece of a new Andy Warhol, Money On The Wall exhibition at Stockholm’s Spritmuseum on October 17.
