Auchan held a special day on the occasion of the World Day of the Deaf
September 25th is the World Day of the Deaf, and on this occasion, Auchan, together with its prominent civil partner, the National Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SINOSZ), is asking all enterprising Auchan customers to try out what it’s like to shop with their hearing turned off. With the small gesture of using earplugs while shopping, we show solidarity with our deaf or hard-of-hearing peers on the occasion of World Day.
Auchan Hungary places great emphasis on equal opportunities, and has been taking concrete steps for more than ten years to employ as many people with disabilities as possible. The company believes that everyone should have the opportunity to do value-creating work, which is why they offer stable and predictable workplaces to hundreds of employees with disabilities. They are respected and valuable members of the Auchan team, which also promotes their social integration.
In addition to its own MMK employment assistance program, the company continuously creates positions tailored to them. With awareness-raising and educational trainings, events, and mini-campaigns, they help integration into the workplace and strengthen the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. They also involve professional partners in their activities, regular cooperation with, for example, SINOSZ.
Now, on the occasion of this year’s World Day of the Deaf, they are asking their customers to use a removable earplug at the entrance to the stores on Sunday, thereby simulating what it would be like to live with a lack of hearing and manage the most ordinary things, such as shopping. Of course, the activity has a gestural value, with which we can express our solidarity towards our deaf and hard of hearing peers. In addition to the experience of “quiet” shopping, customers can also experience that it is easier than expected to find a way to each other, since a smile, a kind or helpful gesture all prove that we are the same, even if we perceive our environment differently or with a different device system we communicate.
A teaser short film was also made about the activity, which can be viewed at the following link:
