After the crisis – a moment of opportunity
Now that most of us have probably left the instant crisis management phase behind and are heading in the direction of settling into the ‘new normal’, we can start realising that probably the most difficult task of our managerial careers is still ahead of us.
A survey published by Boyden in May reveals that 78 percent of more than 100 of our executive consultancy partners think: the challenges and expected consequences of the recent period will have a significant impact on the most important managerial skills too.
Recently I have met several executives and we agreed that we shouldn’t miss the opportunity created by this moment: the skills that are necessary for a focus shift and the experiences we have acquired due to the recent pandemic-related events can lay the groundwork for building a sustainable future – be it sales increasing, transforming operating processes or the company’s business structure, speeding up the digital transformation or recruiting experts who have new-type skills. Boyden’s global survey can provide a useful input in this (Boyden Survey Report: Exploring The Post Crisis Environment, May, 2020).

What do global experts think?
Jutta Menzenbach – Partner, Germany. ‘A crisis reveals visionary leaders. In complex and uncertain times, they are capable of perceiving opportunities that move the company and its employees forward. The (micro) manager, on the other hand, does not have this scope as they are controlled by anxiety, pressure, and distress.’
William Farrell – Managing Partner, Taiwan and South Korea. ‘HR will need to step up its role in ensuring the right people are in the right place to face the new environment. Health and safety will be a clearer and upfront priority. Technology, already playing a crucial role in most companies, will be called upon to provide needed solutions. Protection and security of the supply chain and delivery of goods must be enhanced to secure a spot in the post-COVID- 19 world.’ //
