Agricultural organizations ask the European Parliament for consistency
The European Parliament adopted the report on the long-term resilience of European food security and agriculture, approaching it on a professional basis. COPA-COGECA, the umbrella organization representing the interests of agricultural actors, and the National Chamber of Agriculture welcome this. Furthermore, he firmly asks the representatives not to vote along the lines of dark green dreams, based on this accepted report containing the real conditions, also in relation to the European Green Agreement and the Farm to Table strategies – enforced by the European Commission.
The European Parliament recently adopted the report “Food security and the long-term resilience of European agriculture” with a large majority. This comprehensive document, based on lessons learned from recent health, geopolitical and environmental crises, defines the EP’s position on agricultural issues. The report is fully supported by COPA-COGECA (Committee of Agricultural Professional Organizations – General Association of Agricultural Cooperatives), an organization that brings together players in European agriculture, and it sets out a clear, pragmatic and innovative vision for the future. COPA-COGECA, as well as the National Chamber of Agrarian Economy, strongly request the EP to be consistent during the upcoming votes on issues related to agriculture and to vote faithfully to the adopted report.
The report addresses all the fundamental problems facing European economic society
It presents forward-looking policy initiatives that are not included in the European Commission’s agricultural strategies. These include the emphasis placed on the generational renewal of aging agriculture, agricultural innovation, new cultivation techniques, the strategy related to fertilizers and irrigation, the protein plan and the role of animal husbandry. The report also discusses the coherence of ambitions related to the “green” agricultural transition, given that the financing and sustainability of the agricultural Green Deal, which is not even substantiated by impact studies, cannot be ensured within the current budget framework. It also deals with harmonizing the Green Deal and the trade policy of the European Union, which the two strategies do not pay enough attention to. The report points out and complements the shortcomings of the Green Deal and proposes a more meaningful and sustainable framework for the European agricultural sector than the unachievable dark green dreams. The representatives of the EP should remain faithful to the logical arguments contained in the report even when the European Commission tries to push through such proposals – such as radical restrictions on the use of pesticides and fertilizers – that would make it impossible for agricultural producers.
