The European Commission limits added microplastics
On Monday, the European Commission adopted stricter measures aimed at limiting microplastics intentionally added to products as part of the European Union’s chemical regulation, the Brussels body announced.
According to the commission, the new rules will prevent about half a million tons of microplastics from entering the environment. The rules prohibit the sale of microplastics and products to which microplastics have been intentionally added or which release microplastics during use.
“Banning intentionally added microplastics addresses a serious concern for the environment and human health. Microplastics can be found in seas, rivers and land, as well as in food and drinking water. The restriction now applies to very small particles, but it is a big step to towards reducing human-caused pollution”
– said Virginijus Sinkevicius, Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries.
