Pear makes an excellent compote, but also tasty when raw – here is the new campaign
In our country, pears are grown on nearly 2,000 hectares, including many landscape varieties. Pears are particularly healthy and can be used in many ways – the European Fresh Team, the program promoting fruit and vegetable consumption of the National Chamber of Agriculture, draws attention.
Pears are grown in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county on the largest area, 513 hectares, as well as in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county (412 hectares) and Zala county (212 hectares). About 20,000 to 25,000 tons of pears are grown in our country per year, which largely meets the domestic demand. Imported pears arrive with the purpose of expanding the range, nearly 5,000-6,000 tons per year.
The delicious, sweet, unique-tasting fruit is easy to obtain and store in autumn and winter, but it is not as popular as apples. Just as plum and apple trees were typically found in the courtyards of small gardens in the past, so were pears. State-recognized landscape varieties are, for example, Csengőkörte (Southern Great Plain), Fehérvár pear (Southern and Central Transdanubia), Gyöngykörte (Southern Great Plain), Kétszertermő pear (Western Transdanubia, Carpathian Basin), Köcsog pear (South – and Central Transdanubia), the Maróti winter (Danube bend), the Nácika pear (mainly the Southern Great Plain), the Sózó pear (West Transdanubia) and the Vérbélű pear (Carpathian basin, West Transdanubia, Bodrogköz, Szatmári plain, areas of the Great Plain with good water supply).
