Serious EU challenges in the field of aquaculture
In 2022, the production of aquatic animals in the European Union amounted to 4.2 million tons, the bulk of which, 3.1 million tons, came from traditional fishing. In contrast, aquaculture, the cultivation of fish and other aquatic organisms under controlled conditions, produced 1.1 million tonnes. Aquaculture accounts for 26% of the EU’s total aquaculture production, compared to a global average of around 49%.
However, in the period between 2013 and 2022, there is a significant increase in organic aquaculture production in many EU countries
The value of fishing catches was 6.2 billion euros, while aquaculture production reached 4.9 billion euros. The average price of fishery products is 1.9 euros/kg, while that of farmed aquatic animals is 4.5 euros/kg. This price difference reflects the costs of farming and the added value that aquaculture provides, for example in terms of quality and sustainability.
About two-thirds of EU aquaculture production is provided by four countries: Spain (25.2%), France (17%), Greece (13%) and Italy (12%). The value of the sector in 2022 was highest in Greece (€844 million), followed by Spain (€803 million), France (€791 million) and Italy (€553 million).
