The climate-friendly Tesco store in Sátoraljaújhely uses 25 per cent less electricity and 50 per cent less gas. James McCann, general director of Tesco and Daron Neal, director responsible for investments told us about the past six months. In recent years, it has become a priority for Tesco to fight climate change by minimising their energy consumption world-wide and promoting environment-friendly technologies among their suppliers. The store in Sátoraljaújhely is an experimental design, where the objective is not to achieve a quick return on investment. Energy is saved by the use of added layers of insulation in the walls and in the roof, equipment utilising waste heat from ovens and refrigerators, insulating roofs on freezers, solar cells on the walls and energy saving lighting systems. Heat pumps are used to recycle air from the cooling system and CO detectors control the inflow of fresh air from the outside. Lighting is automatically adjusted according to light intensity outside and is also connected to motion detectors and electric doors. Tesco has also introduced other innovations in other stores. In Dorog, a geo-thermal heat pump is in operation, while in Várpalota, refrigerators use carbon dioxide instead of freon gas. – I am sure, that our innovations will have an effect on the wider public, as 2.5 million people visit our stores each week – said the general director.
