The school milk program faces challenges
Despite facing hurdles, the School Milk Program remains a vital and enduring initiative, according to dairy industry experts interviewed by Agrárszektor. This program, supported by the European Union, aims to provide milk to schoolchildren, with processors receiving set amounts for each product distributed, funded by a combination of EU and national support.
While processors don’t reap direct financial rewards, they wholeheartedly support this educational, health-driven, and arguably social endeavor. They are enthusiastic about expanding it to previous levels, but budget constraints present a significant obstacle. Nonetheless, the Ministry of Agriculture consistently backs the initiative, and there are indications that the EU may increase funding in the future. Brussels is increasingly inclined to ensure that children receive fewer sugary products and more natural dairy items, such as milk, sour cream, and cheese.
The School Milk Program faced disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic and inflationary pressures but has resumed this year. The EU provides financial support for the program, complemented by national contributions from the budget.
