The winners of the Lidl food heroes competition have been announced
Lidl Hungary’s Food Heroes competition, organized by the discount chain for upper elementary school students on the occasion of World Food Waste Day, has ended successfully. More than 1,000 entries were received for the online knowledge test across the country. In addition to individual awards, the best performing class was also recognized. The 6th grade of Deák Ferenc Elementary School and Elementary Art School in Kónyi earned the title of “Most Environmentally Conscious Class”, which allows the students to participate in the interactive, attitude-shaping program of the competition’s professional cooperating partner, the Responsible Gastronomy Foundation.
As a responsible company, the reduction of food waste is extremely important for Lidl Hungary, as well as the related sensitization among its stakeholders. Its commitment is shown by the fact that the supermarket chain launched an awareness-raising campaign called Food Heroes at the end of September, the aim of which is to draw attention to the importance of avoiding food waste. As part of the initiative, the supermarket chain invited the students to an online knowledge test consisting of 12 questions, which assessed the knowledge of young people on the subject, focusing on the prevention of excess food and the reduction of food waste. The best performing students won a big-wheeled scooter, a remote-controlled LED watch and a power bank.
Zsuzsanna Lehel, managing director of the Responsible Gastrohós Foundation, highlighted the following in connection with the competition:
“Food waste is one of today’s biggest environmental problems: we “produce” food waste on nearly a third of the Earth’s agricultural land, we waste a lot of water and emit greenhouse gases by throwing away food. That is why it is very important to show from an early age that food is a value. We were happy to support the initiative of Lidl Hungary’s Food Heroes, and we trust that the Gastrohós and Food Heroes from elementary schools can change our world by forming a team and make more conscious decisions with sustainability in mind.”
Lidl Hungary also strives to reduce food waste in its own operations. By determining optimal order quantities, using a system that monitors shelf-life or quality preservation time, as well as reduced-price sales solutions, it tries to ensure that as little food as possible becomes waste. Let’s save it! fruit, vegetable and bakery unit packages also serve to reduce food surplus, as does Lidl’s food rescue program, through which the company helps tens of thousands of needy people with food donations on an average monthly basis.
