We slaughtered less, but exported more cattle
According to AKI slaughtering statistics, cattle slaughtering in January-July 2024 was 10.2% below the January-July 2023 level in live weight.

The slaughter of cows accounts for two-thirds of all slaughtering and it was down by 11.1%. Data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH) reveal that Hungary’s live cattle exports increased by 7.8% (36 thousand tonnes) and their value grew by 1.4% in January-June 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. The main buyers were Kosovo, Croatia, Austria, Poland, Albania and Italy. Hungary’s live cattle imports were 6.9% higher than a year earlier (12.7 thousand tonnes), with an 8.5% hike in value. More than half of live cattle came from Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. Beef exports were down 24.7% (3.8 thousand tonnes) in volume and 22.1% in value. Beef imports increased by 13% (7 thousand tonnes) in volume and 10.4% in value.
According to AKI PÁIR data, in week 37 domestic cucumbers in the 400-500g size category were sold at the Budapest Wholesale Market for HUF 700/kg, 40% more than in the same week last year.
Domestically grown iceberg lettuce could be purchased for an average price of HUF 375/piece (-13%), while Dutch imports were available for HUF 445/piece in week 37, 27% cheaper than in the same week last year. Home-grown lettuce was sold for HUF 275/piece (+10%), while Lollo Rossa and Lollo Bionda tear lettuce both could be bought for HUF 300/piece, the same as in week 37 of 2023. //
