Two thirds of Penny’s products are Hungarian made
Penny Market Kft., a member of Rewe Group, opened their first food discount store in Szentes in 1996. Presently they have 189 units in Hungary and according to data from the Hungarian Trade Association, Penny’s sales revenue was HUF 137 billion in 2009, ranking number two among food discount store chains behind Lidl. A survey by Nielsen revealed that in 2009 Penny’s turnover expanded by 14 percent and reached HUF 430 billion. Last year was probably hard for Penny too, still they managed to increase the number of their units by 5 percent. The chain’s major goal is to offer steadily low-priced products with optimal price-value ratio. According to the Hungaricum Association, among international discount store chains Penny offers the highest proportion of Hungarian products – 66 percent.
