We eat 35-40 percent of our annual fish consumption at Christmas
Although according to the Hungarian diet, we should eat fish at least once a week, unfortunately the per capita fish consumption of Hungarians remains far below the European average at around 7 kg/person. In addition, a large part of this is only eaten during the end-of-year holidays, which is why fish purchases in our country are still very strongly linked to the Christmas season. The trend that fish consumption in December is increasing year by year can be considered positive, so taking into account the experiences of recent years, retailers are calculating an increasing volume this year as well. It is also clear that the gastronomic interest in fish dishes is also growing, say Auchan experts.
“From the beginning of December, in the weeks leading up to Christmas, the turnover of fresh fish products increases dramatically, but the real rush usually occurs in the 5-6 days before Christmas,” says Attila Nagy, Auchan’s sales director. – Our range of freshwater fish is just as rich as our sea fish and of course our seafood is also wide. We sell fresh products in fish counters or pre-packed.”
Auchan operates fish counters in 12 of its stores during the Christmas period, and the fish selection is displayed pre-packed in 15 stores. In addition, 16 stores sell whole carp, and at this time they offer 11 types of freshwater fish and 13 types of sea fish.
In addition to fresh fish, many fish products are also offered in ready-to-cook form, so that anyone can easily prepare the fish dishes that will be on the festive table. In addition to cleaned whole fish, fresh fish is also sold sliced and filleted, and as an ingredient in fish soup. In addition, there is a large range of frozen fish all year round, and sea fish is often frozen immediately after catching and processing.
Auchan sells approx. It procures 98% of its fresh fish from domestic fish trading partners. In addition to the largest fish processors, it also works with smaller domestic fish farms. The proportions are such that 90% of the fresh fish volume is freshwater fish products, and 10% is marine fish and seafood.
