June 23 is the “Bring your pet to work!” world initiative day
Pets have been present in our lives since the beginning of human history, as our ancestors already knew that the company of dogs and cats has an almost incalculable positive effect. But what exactly with what, was pointed out by PURINA’s international study, in which the June 23 “Take your pet to your workplace!” on the occasion of the world day of the initiative, research examining the beneficial effects of the human-animal relationship was summarized. It turned out that pets have a beneficial effect on our mental health, physical condition and social relationships, among other things.
Most owners know from their own experience that even petting small animals has a good effect on their well-being – just think of the epidemic period, when many people only had this physical contact available to them. According to PURINA’s research, there is almost no life situation where the presence of a pet does not support psychological well-being, physical activity and social inclusion. According to surveys conducted with children, having a pet at home improves young people’s self-confidence, reduces their anxiety, and increases their empathy skills.[1] Children who keep pets at home are 40 percent less likely to experience difficulty forming friendships and 34 percent more likely to treat each other with kindness and consideration.[2] Similar trends were also observed among adults: workers in dog- or cat-friendly offices not only reported lower levels of stress, but also declared themselves to be more satisfied and committed to their work.[3] According to a survey conducted with the elderly, 97 percent of those interviewed were comforted or significantly improved by their pets in the event of an illness.[4]
