Impulse for the ice cream market
The unusually warm weather had a favourable effect on the retail sales of ice cream. Retail sales of ice creams grew by 26 per cent in terms of value last year. Growth was bigger for impulse ice creams than for family sizes. Total sales exceeded HUF 15 billion. Sales were mainly concentrated in the 401-2 500 square meter stores, consisting primarily of supermarkets and discount stores. These took a market share of 41 per cent compared to 35 per cent a year before. Private label products are playing an increasing role, with their market share up by 5 per cent to 43 this January/February. While ice cream was only 19th among the categories measured by Nielsen, it took 11th place in discount stores.
