This is how the shops played tricks because of the price freeze
Magyar Nemzet reported that some of the shops do not comply with the price cap, so 14 percent of the official inspections carried out until August revealed violations. Most of the violations were related to prices, but in many cases, the stores played tricks with the amount of supply.
Although the news of the extension of the food price cap was previously commented on by domestic retailers that they considered the measure acceptable, and instead of raising the prices of other products, they tried to compensate for the loss of profit from maximizing the prices of basic products by cutting their costs, it seems that some stores are now trying to evade the regulation.
The government introduced a price cap for flour, milk, some chicken and pork meats, as well as sugar and sunflower oil, meaning that traders were required not to sell the products in question at a higher price after February 1 than on October 15, 2021.
The necessity of the measure was greatly supported by the events of the following days, as after the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war, an even more significant price increase than before swept through the European food market.
Thanks to the cabinet’s latest decision, Hungarian households can enjoy the benefits of the maximum prices for more than a month, until the end of September. So, for example, they get sunflower oil, sugar or chicken breast significantly cheaper than the consumers of our regional competitors or Western European customers.
