This year, the weather was favorable for pumpkins
Although the summer storms caused serious damage in several places, overall this year the weather turned out to be favorable for growing pumpkins, FruitVeb Hungarian Vegetable and Fruit Trade Organization and Product Council and the National Chamber of Agrarian Economy (NAK) told MTI on Friday.
Due to the good harvest, customers do not have to give up the vitamin-rich plant, which comes to the stores predominantly from Hungarian producers, they wrote. The amount of imports is insignificant, the domestic production area has increased compared to the previous year, its size reaches 1626 hectares, the largest plantations are located in the counties of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg and Csongrád-Csanád. The annual harvest of 35,000 to 40,000 tons covers internal consumption, they wrote.
According to a joint announcement by FruitVeb and NAK, the most common variety in Hungary is the Nagydobosi pumpkin, and you can buy pumpkins not only whole, but also cleaned, cut, and ready-to-cook. Due to its high carotenoid content, it is also used in the cosmetics industry, and as food it is a valuable source of vitamins and minerals.
