HonestFood – a more efficient, sustainable and fairer system
Giacomo Pedranzini, the CEO of KOMETA gives us an insight into the details of the HonestFood concept.
– Your HonestFood concept is a response to the challenges of the food industry. What does HonestFood mean to you and why have you created it?

Giacomo Pedranzini
managing director
KOMETA
– This process we are in isn’t sustainable: food producers and manufacturers are caught up in a spiral that will result in cheap but unhealthy foods filling store shelves. HonestFood promises a more sustainable and healthier environment for consumers and businesses alike. It is about closer cooperation between food producers, manufacturers and retailers, focusing on quality and setting a minimum price below which we mustn’t go, because one can’t produce quality under a certain price level.
– How is HonestFood manifested in KOMETA’s daily operations?
– Over the last decade KOMETA has been concentrating on creating a more sustainable economic environment and producing food that fits into a healthy diet. We have removed soy from our products and increased the meat content. In 2018 we reduced the salt content of most KOMETA products by 25%, while maintaining the taste experience. We give preference to suppliers within a distance of 200km and we have our own water treatment plant. KOMETA not only honours workers with salary increases, but employees also get a hot meal every day.
– What achievements are you the most proud of and what are your plans for the future?
– I am proud that the HonestFood Association has been formed, so that like-minded companies can officially join the movement. My goal is to take the whole market in this direction and to create a more efficient, sustainable and fairer system for all players in the food supply chain. In the next 3-5 years we will participate in a factory saving programme, which will see us install a multi-billion-forint solar farm and we also plan to build a cogeneration water plant. (x)
