Herbs in the food industry
I believe in the healing power of herbs – declared Dr. Márton Nobilis, State Secretary responsible for the food industry and trade policy of the Ministry of Agriculture, at the professional day of the Medicinal Plant Association and Council in Budapest.
The state secretary emphasized that since 2010 the Medicinal Plant Association has been a strategic partner of the government. Looking at the entire sector, the estimated net output is around HUF 110-120 billion. Of this, the net sales revenue of cultivation and collection, as well as the related primary processing, is HUF 30 billion, the rest comes from further processing, the production of finished products and trade.
Dr. Márton Nobilis emphasized that the war and covid highlighted the role of self-sufficiency
It is important to be self-sufficient both in terms of medicine and food. My main goal is to do everything in the current European Union cycle so that the food industry can be self-sufficient with the highest possible processing and thus return to its rightful place, he declared.
The state secretary explained that, in addition to the classic wholesale activity, the retail trade of herbal products is also extremely diverse
They are present in pharmacy chains, in the phytotheca of domestic and international retail chains, right up to local markets. The work of herb growers also contributes to environmental protection and the achievement of sustainable agriculture. Therefore, the government is trying to give this sector as much support as possible, which will provide an opportunity for it to develop further and thereby find export opportunities.
