Thirty ice cream masters from all over Europe took part in the competition, where the winner was Vincenzo Squatrito from Sicily, with his Hallelujah ice cream. “Artisan ice cream is one of Europe’s gastronomic delights, capable of overcoming cultural and climatic barriers”, Domenico Belmonte, the president of Artglace (Confederation of Association of Artisan Gelato Makers of the European Community) told at the event.

The winning ice cream is from a Tuscan confectionery
At this year’s SIGEP trade show Balázs Erdélyi, president of the Hungarian Confectioners’ Craft Union (MCI) invited Domenico Belmonte to MCI’s presidency meeting. This year’s Gelato Day received the biggest media coverage to date in Hungary, and the winner ice cream, Hallelujah is available in 25 Hungarian confectioneries and ice cream parlours.

The competition attracted entries from all over Europe, with thirty masters presenting their skills to the jury
“My experience shows that the amount of ice cream sold is proportional to the media coverage”, told Balázs Damniczki, master confectioner and owner of Damniczki Confectionery in Székesfehérvár, who was one of the initiators of Gelato Day in Hungary. Once again next year’s competition will be open to Hungarian confectioners and ice cream makers too.
