McDonald’s still going strong
Though McDonald’s Magyarország had mentioned the possibility of including traditional Hungarian dishes in its permanent menu earlier, these have been abandoned quite rapidly. McDonald’s uses promotional plans worked out for a year in advance, which means that the duration of promotions is not directly related to their success. Nevertheless, Hungarian Weeks have been one of the most successful promotions of the year. In recent years, McDonald’s has taken steps in the direction of premiumisation in Western Europe, opening more elegant units, with an extended menu which includes healthy dishes made from quality materials. Establishment of the McCafé chain and the introduction of advanced technology are also part of this strategy.

Yankees taking the lead
Ami-Food Kft., the owner of the Yankee Hotdog brand became the leader in the hot dog market last year. Following the disappearance of its biggest competitor, the franchise chain has 400 partners at present. However, many small rivals have also appeared in the market which has lead to more intense price competition.

Chain, chain, kebab-chain
As a result of changes in ownership structure, the Mr Kebab chain has not turned into an open franchise chain. Two new units are to be opened in the second half of 2009.

Costa taking off
The first Costa Coffee unit in Hungary was completed in December. Franchise rights for Hungary have been bought by Lapker Zrt. The second unit is to be opened on Andrássy út.
