FM: 1.8 million tonnes of food waste are generated annually in Hungary every year
About 1.8 million tons, about 68 kilograms per capita food waste is generated annually in Hungary, which would be enough to feed 400-450 thousand people in need – MTI informed the Ministry of Agriculture (FM).
At the request of MTI, the Ministry informed that almost one third of the food produced on global level, about 1.3 billion tons, went to waste. Food waste costs about 990 billion USD a year to the world economy. This volume is used to produce one quarter of all the water used in agriculture worldwide, and this agricultural production is responsible for the 8 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions. (MTI)
