Demand for Pápai Hús meat-free products doubles every year
Meat substitutes make up two percent of the products at Pápai Hús, but the demand for them doubles every year. At the end of summer, a new product made based on the Pope’s recipe, the vegan steak, will appear in stores – the managing director of Pápai Hús Kft. told MTI on Monday.
Péter Szappanos said that almost 30 percent of the Hungarian population has tasted plant-based, vegan meat substitute products, and 5 percent regularly consume them. In response to this need, the company made significant improvements in the order of millions in this area, since 2020, recipe development and improvement has been continuous, he added.
The new vegan steak produced based on the Pope’s idea and recipe will be the first pre-chilled meat-free steak to be sold in Hungary. During heat treatment and slicing, the new product behaves like a meat alternative, he said.
The Papa de Vega product line, which also includes the newest product, vegan steak and kebab, doubles its sales every year. Currently, the turnover of vegan products is below HUF 1 billion, but the goal is to increase this figure in the near future, he said.
