Eurostat: nearly 130 kilograms of food per capita was wasted in the EU in 2023

On average, around 129 kilograms of food waste per inhabitant was generated in the European Union in 2023, almost two kilograms less than in 2022, but three kilograms more than in 2020, when such a report was first published, the European Union’s statistical office, Eurostat, said on Thursday.

According to the EU agency, a total of 58.2 million tonnes of household waste was generated in the EU in 2023, which represents a 0.7 percent increase compared to the data recorded in 2022 (57.8 million tonnes). 53 percent of food waste was generated by households, which amounted to 69 kilograms per inhabitant.

The remaining 47 percent was generated in the food supply chain. About 12 kilograms of food waste was generated per inhabitant in production, 24 kilograms in manufacturing, 14 kilograms in catering and 10 kilograms in food distribution.

In Hungary, the amount of food waste per inhabitant in 2023 was 88 kilograms, of which household waste accounted for 62 kilograms per person.

Of the food waste generated in the supply chain, 1 kilogram per inhabitant went to production, 18 kilograms to manufacturing, 5 kilograms to food distribution and 2 kilograms to catering in Hungary.
