Eurostat: 127 kilograms of food was wasted per inhabitant in the EU in 2020
About 127 kilograms of food was wasted per inhabitant in the European Union in 2020, the first year of the coronavirus epidemic, the statistical office of the European Union, Eurostat, announced on Tuesday.
According to the agency’s first report on this topic, households produced 55 percent of food waste in 2020, which amounted to 70 kilograms per inhabitant, while it was 57 kilograms for actors in the food chain.
Per inhabitant, about 14 kilograms of food waste was generated in production, 23 kilograms in manufacturing, 12 kilograms in catering and 9 kilograms in food distribution.
The total amount of food waste in the EU was almost 57 million tons, of which food thrown away by households accounted for more than 31 million tons.
