Forestry certificate: essential for sustainable forestry
Supporting sustainable forests is more important than ever. Forestry certificates are essential for sustainable forest management. Forestry certificates are a guarantee of origin for purchasers of wood and paper products, which certify that the wood used for making such products had come from sustainable forests. PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes ) and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) are the two major certificates accepted world-wide, on the basis of international agreements like Agenda 21 signed by 178 countries. M-real supports forestry certificates which are approved by an independent third party. The paper plants of M-real have been issued the PEFC certificate and some also have a FSC certificate. M-real „Paper Profiles” are accessible on the www.m-real.com web site. PEFC and FSC – are audited by a third party, – are non-profit NGO-s, – support sustainable forest management, – develop their system of criteria in a transparent process, – are equally accepted. • PEFC is the largest forestry certificate system in the world which defines the minimum requirements for national standards and is currently composed of 35 different systems on the northern hemisphere. FSC has been developed for tropical forests and is used mainly by big forest owners.
