Campaign to encourage pork consumption launched
Red meats occupy a prominent place in a balanced diet, as they contain many minerals that are difficult to absorb from other foods – this is what the “Celebrate with Pork” campaign is all about. The consumption promotion campaign implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, the Agricultural Marketing Center and the Hungarian Meat Industry Association has been timed to the holiday season again this year. The campaign’s two influencers, gastro-host Marcsi Borbás and TikTokker Robi Hentes, will share recipe videos during the promotional period, and they will also be announcing a prize draw, the main prize of which will be a refrigerator filled with pork products.
In Hungary, approximately 30 kg of pork is consumed per capita every year, making it the second most popular type of meat after poultry. Its popularity lies primarily in the fact that it can be prepared in countless ways, and it also has a place on the holiday table.
The sector has also gone through many hardships in recent years, as it has been hit particularly hard by African swine fever and the coronavirus pandemic. Even if the challenges have not passed, the sector is now back on a stable path, which was confirmed by the State Secretary for Agriculture and Rural Development of the Ministry of Agriculture at the press conference announcing the consumption promotion campaign.
Zsolt Feldman said: – For us, the production and consumption of pork is not only part of tradition, but also part of today’s modern, balanced nutrition and part of the Hungarian agriculture of the future. Therefore, within the framework of the Rural Development Program, we have provided nearly 85 billion forints of development funds for nearly 450 pig-breeding enterprises, and several hundred pig farmers have applied for the investment subsidies announced this year. This will help to achieve greater efficiency, higher levels of animal welfare and the development of a much more competitive domestic pig sector in international comparison.
The State Secretary added that in 2024, HUF 10.2 billion will be available for animal welfare support for pig fattening.
