Magazine: ‘Life in the time of Covid’
I have lived through many decisive years throughout my career, from the political transformation in 1989 to Hungary’s accession to the EU in 2004.
But I think the spring of 2020 was the first time when the new situation caught my company completely off guard. Our sales revenues reduced to a quarter basically overnight, and the measures we needed to take for survival were drastic.
Yes, Szamos is a strong brand, but this fact in itself wouldn’t have been enough for our survival – my view is that in the most difficult period the key was clear and honest communication. Without support from our supplier partners and workers, Szamos Marcipán couldn’t have survived. In the second half of May low-scale production restarted and we prepared a business plan for the second half of 2020 that might compensate for the financial loss caused by Covid.
I think that our lives, the way we think and relate to the world have changed in many ways because of the pandemic. ‘Love in the Time of Cholera’, the iconic novel by Gabriel García Márquez says: life is too complicated to believe in the existence of general rules and it ‘can’t be learned’. True, it might be impossible to learn life, but we can get to know life better day by day. I guess this is our most important task after the Covid pandemic. //
