Food Rescue Center: Food is a valuable resource, don’t waste it!
Food is a valuable resource that should not be wasted, especially if it can be delivered to those in need. Today we celebrate World Food Waste Day.
A third of the food produced worldwide is never consumed. In the European Union, approximately 59.2 million tons of food, or 132 kg per person, are wasted each year. In Hungary, the same number is approximately 810,000 tons of food waste per year, roughly 84 kilograms per person, examining the entire food chain.
Food waste is generated at all points of the food chain during cultivation, harvesting, transport, production, packaging, storage, trade, and households contribute the most. However, the majority of waste generation can be prevented! There are many methods to prevent and reduce the amount of waste, which help at certain points of the food chain. A comprehensive solution is awareness raising and education.
In addition to the fact that food waste has serious economic, social and even negative consequences for the environment, action against waste is also a moral and ethical issue.
