The fate of discount newspapers in Hungary has been decided: Lidl, Spar, Auchan showed their strength
While Obi launched its printed catalog with a single hussar cut, most domestic store chains do not plan to introduce paper-based discount newspapers for the time being. Lidl, Aldi, Spar, Auchan and Tesco also spoke to them about the reasons. In addition to all this, however, there are signs that the number of copies published is decreasing, and stores are increasingly trying to direct their customers towards online catalogs.
Recently, we also reported on Pénzcentrum that Obi plowed through its discount newspaper with a single hussar cut. As the store stated, this is already a trend in Western Europe, but not yet in Hungary. And although the DIY store somewhat humorously explained the reasons for the removal, among other things, by saying that the beaver claims all the trees, it is believed that such a decision could also be supported by hard financial considerations.
Even though Hungarian customers still love discount newspapers, publishing such forms can be very expensive. Especially recently, during the rising paper prices and printing costs. Not to mention that it is not the best from a sustainability point of view to distribute a special newspaper in millions of copies per week. This is what most of the major retail players do. Due to OBI’s unexpected move, we were now wondering whether paper-based discount publications might suffer a similar fate in the near future at other store chains.
