The Munch application against food waste is becoming more and more popular
A large quantity of valuable food goes to waste or ends up in landfills worldwide. Approximately 87.6 million tons of food is wasted annually in the EU alone. This is particularly alarming considering that many people still lack access to basic food supplies. Increasingly, people are becoming aware of the concept of food rescue, especially through the Munch application, where they can purchase high-quality food at a 66% discount.
Food waste can originate from local markets, retail stores, restaurants, cafes, and households. In Hungary, around 1.8 million tons of food waste is generated each year, with one-third coming from households and only 5% from the retail sector. Retail chains are paying more attention to selling products nearing their expiration dates. In Hungary, SPAR is using the Munch food rescue platform to sell these items, and any unsold food is distributed to those in need with the help of the Hungarian Maltese Charity Service.
Changing consumer attitudes towards food rescue vary depending on age and motivation. Sustainability, along with affordability and significant discounts, is an attractive factor. Food rescue is particularly popular among university students, young mothers, retirees, and large families, as confirmed by feedback from these groups.
