An average Hungarian household spends 2.8 percent of its total expenses on alcohol
Alcohol consumption accounts for only 2.8 percent of the total expenses of the average Hungarian household. Although this may not seem like a lot at first, the data is still shocking: this rate exceeds the EU average by more than 50 percent and is at a similar level to the Irish.
In terms of spending on alcohol consumption, the Baltic countries and Poland lead the list, reinforcing national stereotypes related to alcohol consumption.
Residents of Mediterranean countries, on the other hand, consume much less alcohol and spend less on it. The Italians are at the bottom of Europe in terms of the amount consumed, while the consumption of alcohol is higher than the Spanish at the overall social level, which may also be due to the cheaper prices.
If we look at the European countries in terms of absolute amounts of pure alcohol, the Czechs are at the top, with an average of 14.3 liters per person per year. This is more than three liters more than the Hungarian portion, which means that they consume almost 50-60 more pints of beer each year.
