Are ultra-processed foods unhealthy?
The effect of the consumption of ultra-processed foods on the human body is increasingly becoming the focus of attention. According to new research, these foods, such as chips or packaged snacks, can have a negative impact not only on our physical but also on our mental health. The results reported by The Wall Street Journal indicate that consumption of ultra-processed foods is associated with changes in learning abilities, memory and emotions.
These foods can even be addictive, raising the possibility of a new mental health condition called “ultra-processed food use disorder.” Research also suggests that eating these types of foods can increase the risk of mental health problems and sleep disorders.
Ultra-processed foods have been linked to diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular problems. They have a rapid effect on the brain’s reward system, which can result in intense cravings and compulsive consumption. The combination of high fat and carbohydrate content further increases food cravings.
