The price of poultry and pork is rising sharply
According to the latest report of the AKI (Institute of Agricultural Economics), the Hungarian poultry sector has significantly increased its exports to the EU, despite the fact that it is experiencing difficulties due to the Ukrainian dumping experienced on the EU market. However, the drop in prices poses a serious challenge in terms of profitability. In the pork sector, producer prices rose, but due to the increase in the costs of the meat industry, they could not pass on the rise in prices, which portends a gloomy future for the companies involved.
According to data from the European Commission, EU27 poultry meat exports decreased by 3 percent in 2023 compared to the previous year, but Hungarian exports rose significantly above the EU average. Based on data from the KSH (Central Statistical Office), Hungary’s poultry meat exports increased by 10 percent in the first months of 2024. At the same time, poultry meat imports also increased, which poses an additional challenge for the sector.
The domestic pork market is also struggling with changes. In the EU, exports fell by 20 percent in 2023, while imports fell by 10 percent. The entry price of pork has decreased in the EU, but the prices of companies and slaughterhouses are still lower compared to the previous year.
