Lamb is expensive, but increasingly popular
Easter is approaching, and in addition to the traditional hits – ham and eggs – many Hungarians also have lamb on their tables. But what is behind the domestic lamb sector, how much meat is sold during the holidays, and what challenges do farmers face? This time, Hello Vidék magazine talked to Dr. Sándor Kukovics, the managing director of the Sheep Product Council.
At the beginning of the discussion, the evaluation of the farmers’ year was discussed. Dr. Sándor Kukovics pointed out that energy and feed prices had a negative impact on the sheep industry. Although prices on the grain market dropped significantly, the prices of fodder used for fattening lambs remained at a high level. The sheep sector is highly dependent on subsidies and faces several challenges: the fragmentation of herds, the small size of individual flocks, the lack of skilled labor and the release of energy prices are a problem.
