Student Work Trends 2025: What Salaries Can Working Students Expect?
This year’s minimum wage increase also has a significant impact on student wages, while tax breaks for young people and the increasingly widespread home office option in internships further increase students’ desire to find a job. The development of student hourly wages largely depends on the nature of the work and geographical location, but the limitations of the personal income tax exemption for those under 25 should not be ignored. What student work trends can be expected in 2025, in which areas can you earn the most as a student, and how should you take advantage of the benefits of student status? The head of the Mind-Diák Cooperative summarizes the most important information.
This is how student wages will develop in 2025
In the case of student work, the monthly settlement is usually based on the hours worked, which students keep in an attendance sheet, largely in digital form. Student wages are adjusted to the current minimum wage, so with the increase in the minimum wage, student hourly wages are also expected to increase by 7-10% in 2025. This means that instead of the previous average gross hourly wage of 1900 forints, the average hourly wage of students will increase to over 2100 forints gross this year. However, the nature of the job and the geographical location also significantly influence the development of salaries.
According to Mind-Diák’s 2024 data, the highest hourly wages are offered in the IT, engineering and technical fields, but outstanding salaries can also be expected in the sales, economic and financial sectors – here hourly wages are expected to be between 2200-2500 forints gross in 2025. In contrast, the lowest-paid student jobs continue to be simple physical jobs, where hourly wages range around 1700-1800 forints gross. In the southeastern regions of the country, students typically work for lower hourly wages, close to the minimum wage, while the highest hourly wages are typical in Northern Hungary, where they are around HUF 2,200 gross. Budapest continues to stand out in this regard: hourly wages here can reach HUF 2,500-3,000 gross, especially in internship positions that require foreign language skills and specialized skills.
Student jobs at home continue to grow
Student jobs that offer the opportunity to work from home are still extremely popular among young people – these are mostly internships.
“At first, many HR managers believed that home office was only a temporary solution brought about by the pandemic, but it has now become clear that it will remain a common practice in the future. At Mind-Diák, we find that this is a huge plus for the younger generation, so much so that they often choose student jobs that offer more flexibility, i.e. (more) home offices or work schedules that can be adjusted to their schedules, despite the higher salary. It is no coincidence that there was a period in 2024 when the majority of our internships (54%) offered the option of working from home,”
– said Róbert Göbl, head of Mind-Diák. The HR expert highlighted that companies are increasingly thinking long-term in internship programs and are helping young talents develop with targeted mentoring, so that they can later strengthen their teams as full-time employees.
