Domestic ham consumption has decreased
According to recent data published by the Hungarian Meat Association, Easter ham is still an essential part of the festive table of Hungarian households. Based on statistics published by GfK in 2023, three million Hungarian households bought Easter meat products and ham worth more than HUF 21 billion, which amounts to 6,800 tons, an average of 2.3 kilograms per household. The head of the Hungarian Meat Association told Hello Vidék that domestic ham consumption has decreased due to the high inflation affecting the sector, but he emphasized the importance of the quality of domestic products.
Discount stores compete for lower prices, often with imported products. The rise in prices has a significant impact on the sector and affects consumers as well. According to the specialist, it is important to strive for quality hams, and he recommends that we carefully examine the product label in order to trace the production process.
In the period between 2022 and 2023, domestic ham consumption decreased, partly due to inflation. High prices are mainly determined by the cost of labor and fuel, as well as the price of pork. The meat association is confident that the consumption of traditional ham will increase this year, and it is expected that there will be new data on the development of traffic in mid-May. Experts warn that because of sales, consumers may be inclined to choose cheaper products, but the quality choice may be more worthwhile in the long run.
