Fewer visitors in transit
The number of visitors staying for only one day was 3 per cent down in the first quarter of 2008, compared to the same period in 2007. The number of visitors staying for several days was up by 5 per cent. However, visitors staying for only one day still accounted for nearly 80 per cent of the total in the first quarter of 2008. The amount of time spent by foreign visitors in Hungary was down by 8 per cent, compared to the first quarter of 2007. 40 per cent of visitors staying for one day are transit passengers. 27 per cent come shopping and only 18 per cent are tourists. Most of the visitors staying for several days come from Germany and Austria. Budapest and the western region are the most popular destinations for these visitors.
