It is not the record yield of wheat that counts this year, but the high quality
The proportion of cereals in the sown area has increased nationwide, but much less corn is being sown in Southern and Eastern Hungary this year. Farmers are naturally planning something to replace this, so they are primarily thinking about cereals, since they are more resistant to drought, so the proportion of wheat in this area has increased significantly, but the sown area of corn has not decreased in Transdanubia.

Overall, the situation with the sown area of corn is not good either; before the historic drought it was 1 million hectares, and this year it has decreased to 600-700 thousand hectares, which is very low in national terms. The sown area of cereals is therefore increasing, which is also very important for breeders and they hope that farmers will pay more attention to quality. László Cseuz, a breeder at the Szeged Grain Research Institute, is also confident in this. He says that the sowing area of varieties that stand out with their record yields has not increased, as the purchase price of wheat is still very low. They are looking for varieties that have high protein and wet gluten content, which is why farmers are focusing on quality conditions. It is also interesting this year that the previously wettest Western and Northern Transdanubia have been the driest since the beginning of the year, so if we get more rain, there will be no problem with development. The specialist also said that diseases also occur in traces during the development period – such as powdery mildew and yellow rust. – It depends on the variety, but when the wheat is beyond the phenolic phase of bushiness, frost can affect it badly, because during such a period its winter hardiness ceases and it starts to march into the stem. Significant frosts can cause damage, but night and early morning frosts do not cause any damage – concluded László Cseuz.
