Tipping around the world in 2023
YouGov examined the issue in 7 Northern and Western European countries (Germany, Great Britain, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Denmark) and the USA.
Some respondents also feel that they have to tip, for example due to social pressure (9% of tippers in Spain and 21% in Sweden). Poorly paid staff hardly motivates Nordic consumers to tip (8%-9%), but it does for a larger proportion of American (24%), French and Italian (23% each) tippers. In Germany, this rate is 21%. Americans tip even if they have experienced bad or very bad service at a restaurant. One in five Americans who tip at all and have experienced very poor service at a restaurant say they tip all or most of the time (21%). This is probably also due to the fact that many people in the US who work in the service sector, such as restaurants or taxi drivers, are tipped (15-20% tips are common here) due to the very low wages, and if necessary are also demanded directly.
