Are potatoes safe?
In the latest test of the Supermenta program, experts from the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) examined the packaged potatoes by measuring, among other things, almost eight thousand laboratory parameters. They checked, for example, the possible presence of plant protection product residues and heavy metals, as well as mold and GMO tests. The test ended with a reassuring result, as the inspectors found everything in order.
At the beginning of September, Nébih specialists collected 27 different, including 2 organic, packaged potatoes from the shelves of commercial supermarket chains. According to their origin, 13 of the 1-3 kg products were Hungarian, 7 French, 4 Slovak, 2 Croatian and 1 Austrian. Regarding their use, 6 “A” potatoes, i.e. salad, 16 “B” potatoes for cooking and 5 “C” potatoes for baking were included in the test. Among other things, mold and GMO testing took place in the laboratory, but the experts also checked the presence of possible pesticide residues and heavy metals, and measured the starch and protein content of the products. In general, it can be said that the internal content and food safety characteristics of the examined potatoes met the regulations. During the marking inspection, the official inspectors checked whether the mandatory elements – for example, the name of the variety or the cooking method that helps the use – were included in the correct form on the labels. No shortcomings were discovered in this area either, everything was found to be in order.
In the popularity test, experts and lay tasters scored the products. Based on their evaluation, the order was as follows:
Type “A” potatoes, i.e. salad potatoes:
1. Sissi, yellow, Potatoes for meals, for salad (Tesco’s most delicious)
2. Cherie, red, salad potato (Prima)
3. Cherie, red, Golden Burg potatoes for salads (Spar)
“B” type, i.e. potatoes used for cooking:
1. Red Fantasy, red, organic organic potatoes (Lidl Market)
2. Ditta, yellow, organic potatoes (Aldi)
3. Red Fantasy, red, Golden Burg Potatoes, for cooking (Penny)
“C” type, i.e. potatoes for baking:
1. Megan, yellow, flour potatoes, for baking (Tesco)
2. Wega, yellow, Golden Burg for baking potatoes (Spar)
3. Belami, yellow, potatoes, for baking (Lidl Market)
