EU funds nano packaging research
The four year research programme has a budget of €36m, about half of which comes from an EU research programme.
Over the past five years packaging suppliers have been introducing various
forms of biodegradable packaging, based on projections that consumers and
recycling regulations will drive demand for environmentally-friendly packaging.
Supermarket chains, such as Wal-Mart, have also been driving the change
throughout its suppliers.
The EU project, SustainPack, aims to create new environmentally-friendly
fibre-based packaging to replace oil-based plastics. The fibres are obtained
from natural, sustainable raw materials, such as wood. The project brings
together a consortium of 35 participants from 13 countries, representing
packaging research associations, academia and industry.
It's not only aesthetic, it's strong enough.
