The Ministry of Agriculture expects retail chains to voluntarily reduce prices
What is happening in stores these days is unacceptable, price increases must be stopped in the interests of families and pensioners! The Ministry of National Economy (NGM) is conducting intensive negotiations with market players in order to reduce food prices. The ministry expects retail chains to indicate their intentions within a week at the latest, by the beginning of next week – the NGM announced in its statement on Wednesday.
In order to curb food inflation, the government remains ready to intervene with all its means.
Voluntary price reductions should be applied primarily to those basic foodstuffs that constitute a significant part of the basket of Hungarian families and pensioners and were affected by the previous price freeze and then the mandatory action, or that serve to replace these foodstuffs.
Such products include mainly chicken, pork, cooking oil, eggs, milk and dairy products, flour, sugar, and other basic foodstuffs – the NGM listed.
Within the framework of the voluntary price reduction, the Ministry of National Economy expects commercial actors to contribute to the stabilization of food prices by reducing their currently applied margins.
Examining the price developments of the past period, it can be clearly stated that in the case of certain basic foodstuffs, the difference between the purchase price and the final consumer price has increased significantly.
Although price reductions have already been experienced in stores for certain products in the past period, this has not proven to be permanent or significant.
