The European Commission has recognized the favorable GHG emission values of domestic grain and oilseed production in a decision
It is important news for the operation of the domestic grain and oilseed market that the European Commission, with its decision published on January 9, 2025, recognized the data contained in its report on the GHG emission levels characteristic of Hungary’s agricultural raw material production for the so-called NUTS2 regions and the five most important arable and oilseed crops, such as grain maize, winter rapeseed, sunflower, winter wheat and soybean.

The European Commission announced in 2023 that the newly calculated greenhouse gas (GHG) regional emission values developed and previously recognized within the framework of RED I, related to the sustainable production of arable crop crops used for biofuel production, the so-called NUTS 2 values, are no longer valid. Consequently, it invited Member States to submit new NUTS 2 values for recognition. Hungary complied with this and submitted to the European Commission, within the framework of RED II, a report on the GHG emission levels characteristic of the production of agricultural raw materials for the NUTS 2 regions for the aforementioned crops. The decision ensures the safe sale of crops sustainably produced domestically for biofuel purposes and represents a major step forward in measuring the GHG emissions of our raw material production. In addition, measures to reduce GHG emissions from agricultural production and ensure sustainable production are also included in Hungary’s CAP Strategic Plan.
