The European Commission is introducing stricter limits for heavy metals in food, such as cadmium and lead, with the aim of reducing the carcinogenic content of food, according to a press release from the Brussels panel.
According to a Commission decision based on many years of scientific research, maximum levels of carcinogenic cadmium in fruit, vegetables, cereals and oilseeds should be reduced by commodity producers, as should lead, in infant formulas and follow-on formulas. In addition, the committee set a new maximum level for lead in forest mushrooms, spices and salt. (MTI)
