The EU would easen the opportunities for food donation
The European Union would facilitate rules on food donation, thereby reinforcing action against the emergence of food waste, the EU commission announced.
According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), around one third of the world’s food is lost or discarded. Nearly a quarter of the EU population – about 119.1 million people – are at risk of poverty or social exclusion, and nearly 42.5 million people could not afford quality meals every two days. It is estimated, however, that approximately 88 million tonnes of food waste are generated annually in the EU, estimated at an additional cost of 143 billion euros. (MTI)
