Despite the rainy weather, the Hungarian fields have a good harvest
Despite the warm weather and lack of rainfall this spring, according to the harvest results of Talentis Agro Zrt., the quantity and quality of autumn barley is acceptable. The holding planted barley on 2.5 thousand hectares, a significant part of which has already been harvested. Part of the crop is fodder barley, while another part is used as brewing barley, and a total of 63 malting barley was harvested per hectare.
Autumn wheat: half the grain content, good protein content The harvest of winter wheat is also in full swing, and more than half of the 11,000 hectares sown have already been harvested. According to István Zimmermann, member of the board of Talentis Agro Zrt., the crop results are promising, although the grain content of edible wheat reaches the lowest level, but the protein content is adequate. “Overall, a good, medium harvest is expected, we can bring last year’s level this year as well,” said Zimmermann.
Growing demand for edible wheat
Traders have indicated a significant demand for edible wheat, looking for quality raw material domestically. In Hungary, wheat is grown on 860,000 hectares this year, which is less than the previous year’s 1 million hectares, but the crop will still cover domestic needs and provide export opportunities.
Rape: the Hungarian climate is not favorable
Rapeseed is also being harvested, but the average yield does not reach 3 tons per hectare. Talentis Agro’s canola fields are currently at 2.6 tons. According to István Zimmermann, the cultivation of rapeseed in Hungary is not economical, especially in areas with less rainfall. The rapeseed area this year is below 200,000 hectares, which also shows the decreasing importance of the sector.
Storms slowed the harvest, but the grain is of good quality
According to Tamás Petőházi, the president of the National Association of Grain Growers (GOSZ), this year’s harvest started earlier, but the weather conditions slowed down the work. By the beginning of July, the autumn barley had already been harvested from the 259,000-hectare area, the average yield was 5.7 tons/hectare.
High quality wheat due to April rains
Wheat harvesting also continues, and the average yield is expected to be similar to that of barley, i.e. about 5 million tons of winter wheat will be harvested, which is more than twice the domestic requirement. This also provides an opportunity for export markets. In the case of autumn cabbage rape, the average yield is 2.7 tons/hectare, which falls short of expectations due to the unfavorable autumn and winter weather. According to Tamás Petőházi, despite the wetter weather, the quality of the grain remained excellent, as the precipitation did not fall continuously for several days. “As a result of the rains in April, we can harvest very beautiful, healthy grains of wheat, which we are especially happy about,” said Petőházi.
