Waitrose has a new initiative to turn surplus food unfit for human consumption into animal feed, contributing to the reduction of food waste. This will take the form of a six-month trial: damaged or leftover food will be placed in colour-coded bags, and then transported to the retailer’s depot. Food waste company Resource will collect this food and turn it into animal feed or pet food. Currently the project runs in 20 Waitrose stores.
