Aldi Süd reorganizes meat refrigerators by animal welfare standards instead of species
Aldi Süd has become the first major grocery retailer in Germany to reorganize its fresh meat section based on animal welfare standards rather than animal type.
The change aims to make it easier for customers to distinguish between conventional and higher-welfare meat products.
From now on, Aldi Süd will divide its fresh meat shelves into three color-coded sections: blue for conventional farming (levels 1 and 2), green for higher animal welfare standards (levels 3–5), and red for promotional items. The company plans to switch entirely to offering fresh meat, milk, and chilled meat products from higher welfare levels (3 and up) by 2030. In certain categories, such as drinking milk and poultry and beef products, only products by higher animal welfare standards have been sold.
Additionally, Aldi Süd will enhance the visibility of higher animal welfare products in standard refrigeration areas using ceiling hangers and magnetic signs.
The transition is expected to be completed by mid-July and is being monitored through an independent study by the University of Bonn.
